The research activity of IEMR includes the theoretical and experimental investigations leading to design and manufacturing of powerful microwave magnetically insulated line oscillators (MILO) of various geometries. Both low-resistant and high-resistant modifications of MILO are developed.

The compactness, small weight and absence of external magnetic fields explain the attraction of microwave oscillators of this type. Low impedance of MILO allows producing of intensive electron flows and, correspondingly, generation of high intensive microwaves (of the order of 1 GW and higher) at rather low voltages (of the order of several hundreds kilovolt). Such microwave oscillators can be used as well matched load for low-resistance power sources based on magnetocumulative generators.

Basic characteristics of MILO:

Width of generated pulses
80-100 ns;
Oscillation frequency
2 GHz
Operational regime
Single pulses
Supply voltage
450 kV
Oscillator length
1.3 m
Maximum diameter
0.35 m
Weight
85 kg

The oscillator provides the paraxial radiation mode with beamwidth of ±20° on a frequency of 2 GHz.

General view of MILO

Currently, IEMR performs investigation of MILO directed towards the increase of oscillator efficiency on retention of power source performance. With this purpose MILO has being modified in two directions:

  • a use of slowing structures mounted on the cathode and also a use of spiral slowing structures;
  • plasma filling of MILO.
